What Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression is a drug-free, non-surgical stretching of the spine. It is also a non-invasive, narcotic-free way to relieve pressure on compressed discs, alleviate pain, promote spinal healing, and restore spinal positioning.

The practitioners at Wellspring Health use a specialized machine and training to provide spinal decompression therapy that decreases pain, restores mobility, and improves function. Treatment usually consists of several short sessions where patients simply lie on their backs, relax, and let the machine do all the work.

How Does It Work?

Through very controlled, slight, back and forth movements, injured discs are gently pulled away from one another, then released. This stretch-relax movement opens up the spinal column, creating a suction action that draws the injured disc back into their proper positions. As retraction occurs, nerves become less aggravated and self-healing occurs. Patients do not experience pain, but they may feel a stretch.

Surgical decompression techniques usually involve the removal of components of the spinal column to provide more room for the aggravated nerve roots.

What Can Spinal Decompression Treat?

Spinal decompression is a very effective solution for treating low back pain, neck pain, and leg pain. It is commonly used when discs are herniated or bulging. By allowing the injured disc to return to its natural position, inflammation and irritation decrease and the body is able to heal itself.

It is not a recommended treatment option for pregnant women, anyone who has had spinal fusion or back surgery in the past, or anyone with broken vertebrae. It also generally isn’t effective or recommended for those with degenerative conditions like osteoporosis.
