Not Utilizing Your Auto Insurance

One of the main reasons for having auto insurance is to use the money towards medical treatment of any injuries sustained in the accident. Your personal injury protection benefits (PIP) are designed to cover these costs whether or not you are at fault for the crash. Don’t neglect to use your auto insurance as the primary coverage for injuries sustained from the accident. Remember, you have only 14 days in the state of Florida to seek medical attention, or you run the significant risk of losing your PIP benefits.

Not Taking Enough Pictures

In our previous post, we encouraged you to get pictures of the accident scene if you are able to. While some people make the mistake of not taking pictures at all, still others make the mistake of not taking enough. There are a few things to keep in mind when taking pictures.

For one, you should take pictures from as many angles as possible. If you were rear-ended, for example, then take photos of the back of your car from the inside and out. Open the trunk and take pictures to show damage to the inside of the vehicle. If your vehicle was hit from the side, then take pictures of the inside of the damaged doors and any interior damage to the frame or seats.

Don’t forget to also take pictures of the other person’s vehicle. You are allowed to do this, and the pictures you take could help make a stronger case when you file your claim with your insurance company.

Also, take pictures of any visible injuries that you sustained immediately following the crash and any injuries that appear within the next few days. These superficial cuts and bruises will fade over time, so document, document, document.

Losing Your Pictures

Fortunately, we live in an age where the pictures we take are more often on our phones than on actual cameras. This means that you are less likely for you to lose the pictures, but it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take precautions. No matter what device you used to take your pictures, be sure to load them onto a USB drive and then save them to your home computer. By making sure that your pictures are saved in multiple locations, you will be less likely to lose them, which will help when you need to provide proof of the damage sustained in the accident.

Hedging The Truth In A Recorded Statement

If you give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurance company, then make sure that you are telling the truth so that you do not create problems for yourself. Giving a statement that is anything other than the complete truth could result in serious problems. If it is discovered that you made even small exaggerations about the incident, then the other insurance company is likely to find out, and that one mistake can hurt your case.

Not Reviewing The Police Report

The majority of police officers do their best each day and work for the good of their community. That being said, they are human and capable of making mistakes. Most of the time, these mistakes are small. Other times, they can deeply impact your case. It is important that you ask to review the report so that you can verify that it is completely accurate. Reviewing the report will give you the opportunity to identify any mistakes and make sure that they are amended to accurately reflect the incident.
